About the Issue
During the current deployment to Afghanistan, the National Guard has set up a statewide coalition that offers assistance to Vermont Guard members and their families before, during and after they are sent to war zones. This month’s edition takes a look at the services available to military families and ways community members can help.

The Greater Burlington YMCA
The Greater Burlington YMCA is a partner in the Living in the New Normal initiative, focused on helping children and families cope with military deployment. It is a charitable community service organization that provides child care at 24 sites, offers 80 youth and family programs, and has two fitness branches. Their non-discriminatory enrollment practices offer all members the opportunity to apply for financial assistance.

HowardCenter
HowardCenter is a partner in the Living in the New Normal initiative, focused on helping children and families cope with military deployment. Resources available through HowardCenter are child, youth and family services; developmental services; and adult mental health and substance abuse services.

Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)
MCEC's goal is to level the educational playing field for military children wherever they are located around the world, and to serve as a model for all highly mobile children. Local contact: Ret. BG Keith Martin

Military Family Community Network (MFCN)
The MFCNetwork of VT exists to help veterans and their family members following deployment.

Military OneSource (MOS)
This is a one-stop, 24/7 resource for all military members, spouses and their families needs. You can access this program online or by phone at 1-800-342-9647 for assistance. The Vermont Military OneSource JFSAP Consultant is Marcie Caulfield.

Mobius, The Mentoring Movement
Mobius recruits mentors for kids who need or want a mentor and refers them to mentoring programs in Chittenden County.

National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRA)
NACCRRA, the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies, is our nation's leading voice for child care. They work with more than 700 state and local Child Care Resource and Referral agencies nationwide. These agencies help ensure that families in 99 percent of all populated ZIP codes in the United States have access to high-quality, affordable child care

National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program NGCYP
The mission of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth to produce program graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults. Local contact: Paula Sumrall

Constituent advocates answer questions about federal agencies and provide help with resolving a problem with the military, the Veterans Administration or any other federal agency or program.

Operation: Military Kids (OMK)

Our Military Kids
Our Military Kids provides tangible support to children of deployed National Guard and Reserve personnel as well as to children of severely injured service members through grants for enrichment activities and tutoring.

P.O.V. “The Way We Get By”
The Way We Get By is a film about the "troop greeters" of Bangor, an intrepid group of retired and elderly citizens who have taken it upon themselves to greet every troop plane arriving or departing Bangor, which is the last and first piece of U.S. soil many GIs will see before and after their deployments. Show your support for our troops by visiting the Returning Home Project.

SaveAndInvest.org, a free service of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation — helps protect you from investment fraud and provides information to help you confidently handle your finances. They have a section of their website with specific information geared toward the military.

South Burlington Vet Center
The South Burlington Vet Center provides readjustment to soldiers and their families post military service and discharge. Services include mental health services to individuals and couples, as well as group treatment. The Center also advocates for soldiers seeking VA services. Contact: Fred Forehand

Vermont 2-1-1
Vermont 2-1-1 is a statewide telephone information and referral program of the United Ways of Vermont. Services are free, confidential and available 24/7. Dial 2-1-1 for person to person assistance finding resources to help meet your needs.

Vermont Department of Education
The Vermont Department of Education is available to coordinate professional development and resources in support of the children and families who are affected by the deployment. Contact: Andrew Hudacs

VT National Guard Family Program
The Vermont National Guard Family Program provides assistance to military members and their families as needed.
