Farmers'
Night with the
Vermont Symphony Orchestra
Airs
Wed., Dec. 7, at 7:30 pm
Repeats Sat, Dec. 10, at 4 pm
The
House chamber of Vermont's historic Statehouse was brightly lighted. Legislators'
desks were full some with their usual occupants and some with other
Vermonters who had come out on a frosty night to hear beautiful music.
The occasion was a January Farmers' Night concert at the Statehouse in Montpelier
with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO)
led by music director Jaime Laredo. And Vermont Public Television was there
to record the event for broadcast VPT's first broadcast of a complete
VSO concert.
The VPT broadcast begins with producer Chris McClure providing a brief history
of Farmers' Night and the VSO's annual participation since 1936. The free
concert is possible because the musicians donate their services.
The musical program begins with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Next
is Mozart's Divertimento No. 1, then three movements of Dvorak's Serenade
for Strings. The concert concludes with Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Violins.
The young Hungarian Barnabas Kelemen, who won the prestigious Indianapolis
Violin Competition in 2002, and the VSO's Jaime Laredo are the spirited
violin soloists on the piece.
The VSO Farmers' Night concert is an annual tradition. In recent years it
has been dedicated to the memory of David M. Wilson, who was a prominent
attorney and a member of the VSO board.
Make a $60 gift to VPT and we will thank you with a DVD of this program.
